The name "Hog Heaven" comes from the original name of
Moscow, Idaho. The town picked up that name due to the
abundant camas roots in the area which the hogs loved to
root... hence the name. The folks of Moscow decided early on
(late 1800's), that they needed a much more "civilized" name...
and the name Hog Heaven gave way to Moscow, now the home
of 20,000+ residents and around 14,000 students at the
University of Idaho.
HHML primarily operates in north central Idaho, with occasional
side trips to Montana, Washington, and Oregon. HHML regularly
puts on Living History displays for schools, cities, museums and
historical parks.
HHML has worked with Idaho PBS and other film crews on
several films, such as Echoes of a Bitter Crossing: Lewis & Clark
in Idaho, and the River of No Return: Idaho's Scenic Salmon.
Hog Heaven Muzzleloaders Inc. (HHML) is a registered 501(C) Non-Profit
Organization. HHML was organized back in '79, incorporated in '82, and gained
Idaho and federal non-profit status in '03.
Our club's emphasis is on "hands-on" historical education, focusing on the early
exploration of the Pacific Northwest. While this encompasses the Lewis & Clark
expedition, our main focus is on the competing fur companies of Canada,
England, and the United States.
Members of HHML:
* Trace the pathways of the early explorers and fur traders throughout Idaho
(and the Pacific Northwest) on foot, on horseback, and in
* nterpret early American history for schools and other community organizations.
* Sponsor a Fur Trader's Rendezvous every year (Father's day) near Troy
Idaho.
While our members may come from many different walks of life, we all share one
thing in common..... and that is a love of the early history of our country.
HHML Annual Rendezvous: Father's Day, near Troy, Idaho.
